Alignment. This is one of those words you will hear very often at your local car repair shop. If your alignment is out, you will find that the steering wheel doesn’t seem to go where you want it to go. Whether it shakes or pulls left or right is really a symptom of what is out of line and how bad. The wear and tear on a vehicle like this is constant, and you will find that tires go more often and the cost of misalignment adds up over time.

Business is very similar, and partnerships require perfect alignment if you want to stop a partnership from becoming a sinking ship. In franchising, it is critical that the franchisees, and franchisors understand each other’s goals, and earnestly put forth best efforts to help each other achieve them. If not, you will find that the direction you want to go will be consistently thrown off by the direction your partners want to go. This wastes both valuable time and resources.

Photo courtesy of North Carolina Business Litigation Report

I would like to speak to one major issue in franchise alignment that I have seen come up time and time and again. Every franchisee pays a royalty to the franchisor. This royalty is calculated on the gross sales of the franchisee and is taken off the top regardless of profit levels. The danger in this is some franchisors only look at the top line revenue as the goal, as that is what drives their profitability, while the franchisee goals might be more about what hits their bottom line. This misalignment creates friction in a partnership if both parties are not equally committed to each other’s goals. I have seen some franchisors demand massive investments in marketing and advertising to drive that top line growth, only to see profits erode if not disappear on the bottom line.

When choosing a franchise system, it is critical that an open conversation on this topic is addressed and you feel comfortable that your partner has your best interests at heart.

When you look at your life, making matches are some of the most important decisions we will all make. Think of the matches you have made to date (and I am not talking about coordinating clothes for a big date). As a kid, your first choice might be finding a sport to participate in that matches your interests. As you get older, then face matching your higher education to fit your career aspirations. And what about discerning whether or not you’ve found the right person to date, let alone marry? The list could go on and on but I think we get the point: the matches we make in life can either change or sour the directions we take. This principle applies to more than milestones, but to our businesses as well. When looking to buy a franchise, it is integral to find one that matches your needs, resources, and aspirations. One of the best ways to do this is by working with a business consultant.

Some may not feel they always have the control over whom or what they end up matching with. But the reality is that we do, we just might not know where to even find the perfect match. For instance, if you wanted to meet new people you might go to a dating site, friend or club to facilitate the opportunity. In the business world, there are networking services that facilitate similar opportunities. But what if you are starting a new business or changing your career? What are the matching services for finding the perfect business? While most people have heard about cupid.com, they may not know that there is a plethora of matching services for those looking to own their own business through buying a franchise.

Business consultants provide such matching services, helping you navigate throughout the complexities of the business search process. They can target your needs, supplement your skills, and introduce you to franchise possibilities you hadn’t considered before. A business consultant can help you not only find a match but can also help it prosper through financing opportunities, formulating a business plan, and generating an analysis of what you can expect. Finding the right business consultants can be one of the most important matches you ever make because of the resources they provide in finding a franchise to invest your money in.

FEDERAL WAY—Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt announced its Grand Opening celebration for Thursday, October 6th.

Sub Zero Ice Cream was started under the direction of founder, Jerry Hancock. Hancock wanted an ice cream shop where customers would have limitless options. Each serving of Sub Zero Ice Cream is made to order: selecting a quality premium, low-fat, custard-style, non-fat yogurt, or lactose-free base; adding one or more of 40+ flavors; choosing any of more than 20 mix-ins; and—as customers watch—flash freezing it with liquid nitrogen.

“Sub Zero Ice Cream not only provides delicious ice cream, but brings a concept that is entertaining and educational and draws people from throughout the area to Federal Way,” Owner, Jack Walsh said. “Every serving of ice cream is made to order and flash frozen with 321-degree-below-zero liquid nitrogen right in front of the customer.”

Walsh and his family are 27-year residents of Federal Way. Since his first experience with Sub Zero Ice Cream, Walsh knew it was a treat he had to bring home to share with the rest of Federal Way community.

“When I first visited a Sub Zero store a year ago, I knew that I wanted to bring home the wonderful quality and customization that is Sub Zero Ice Cream,” Walsh said. “Since that time my family and I have worked tirelessly to get the franchise rights, secure a lease in a top-quality shopping center, build a beautiful facility and train a great staff.”

Sub Zero has been opened in Federal Way since mid-September, but extended their grand opening date, to allow the staff to be fully trained. The business has created jobs for 16 part-time employees.

“Hundreds of people from Federal Way and as far away as Seattle and Olympia have already visited us,” Walsh said. “We are heartened by the response of the community.”

Sub Zero Ice Cream is also able to travel off-site with portable liquid nitrogen tanks to cater and weddings, corporate events and other occasions. In addition, this Sub Zero location also serves gourmet coffee, roasted locally by Poverty Bay Coffee Company.

Federal Way Mayor Skip Priest, will be in attendance to cut the grand opening ribbon at 11:30 a.m., free samples of ice cream will be provided throughout the afternoon and evening.

Sub Zero Ice Cream in Federal Way is located at 31653 Pacific Hwy South in Suite A. Open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., closed Sundays. For more information, please call (253) 941-3248 or visit us online at www.subzeroicecream.com

Taking the crown again, Sub Zero wins for the best ice cream in the Informal Dinning/Carryout category.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a Utah favorite again this year,” Sub Zero Ice Cream founder, Jerry Hancock said. “It’s important to me make the freshest ice cream possible and I’m happy that I am able to share that with my customers.”

Sub Zero Ice Cream’s unique cryogenic techniques freeze ice cream on the spot in completely customizable individual servings according to the customer’s specifications. With over 37 sextillion options available, customers choose the cream base, flavor combinations, mix-ins and even the overall texture desired. The mixture is then flash frozen with -321 degrees Fahrenheit liquid nitrogen, creating the fastest-frozen and creamiest ice cream possible.

When ice cream is frozen traditionally in a freezer, ice crystals have time to form which progressively compromises the smoothness of the cream; but the shorter the freezing process, the more minuscule those ice crystals are and the creamier the ice cream is. Sub Zero Ice Cream freezes their ice cream in about 15 seconds and serves the ice cream immediately, making it the creamiest and freshest ice cream available in the state.

Along with providing customers with an exciting experience and delicious ice cream, Sub Zero Ice Cream is also committed to science education. Hancock travels from school to school across the state giving science presentations to students. Decked in a white lab coat and using liquid nitrogen and other props he demonstrates concepts such as phase changes, condensation, evaporation, atmosphere, gas expansion, contraction, heat transfer and crystallization.

“It’s important to educate students and to get them excited about science and its application to the world,” Hancock said. “We like to show students how ‘cool’ science can really be!”

Sub Zero Ice Cream currently has 12 locations throughout Utah and Arizona.

Five Star Franchising and Franchises for Sale join forces

Five Star Franchising and Franchises for Sale are merging together in what they hope will create a stronger overall experience for consumers interested in franchising opportunities.

“We’re bringing together our core strengths. Franchises for Sale has strong content optimization and networking that will help give us exposure to thousands of consumers interested in franchising opportunities,” Five Star Franchising CEO, Scott Abbott said. “In turn, we bring our strong social media, public relations and online marketing strategy.”

Five Star Franchising, founded 2008, is a holding company for various franchise concepts. Five Star partners with established businesses considering the franchise model to expand their operations.

Franchises for Sale, founded in 2009 by Richard Simtob (CEO) and Gail Parker (president), is the first lead generation site company of its kind focusing on educating prospective franchise candidates with more content and only charging franchise brands for leads that close.

“We focus on giving more information online including franchise fees, royalties, minimum/maximum investments, etc. The Franchisor pays nothing until the lead closes,” Simtob said. “For serious franchise candidates this is the #1 resource with all the detailed up to date information.”

Abbott and Simtob, longtime friends, have been looking for an opportunity to go into business with each other for years. With the current growth and expansion of both their companies they saw this as a great time to merge the companies.

“We have been trying to find ways to work together for years and have finally found something we can have some fun with,” Abbott said. “We’re excited about this merger and being able to create a stronger resource for the consumer.”

SUB ZERO ICE CREAM FREEZES ON INTO MURRAY

SALT LAKE CITY – Sub Zero Ice Cream is proud to announce the opening of its newest location in Murray, opening on May 14.

Sub Zero Ice Cream was started under the direction of founder, Jerry Hancock. Hancock wanted an ice cream shop where customers would have limitless options. Using cryogenics, the study of very low temperatures, Hancock and his franchisees only need to stock a variety of fresh creams and mix-ins to give customers the ultimate say their frozen desserts. Customers can choose their base, any of the trillions of flavor and mix-in combinations, then watch as their creation is flash-frozen right before their eyes.

“My wife and I went out for ice cream one night; we tried Sub Zero and discovered why it has won States Best, 3 years running, in taste. Above that, it was very unique,” Sub Zero Ice Cream – Murray Owner, Tyson Foster, said. “It’s a younger franchise that I saw an opportunity to grow with. The rest is history and I’m very excited to be opening this store.”

Foster graduated from Brigham Young University – Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management/Finance. He is currently a trader at Fidelity Investments; Sub Zero Ice Cream will be his first business venture.

“Owning a franchise has been a plan of mine as a beginning investment ever since I was in college, various experiences and classes led me to that decision,” Foster said. “I was looking for something that was simple but unique, something that was recognizable and different than other franchises. I wasn’t necessarily looking at restaurant franchises but when I found this one, it fit my criteria.”

Foster was a competitive body builder for many years and although he no longer competes on stage, he still takes physical health seriously. Sub Zero Ice Cream was the perfect fit for Foster not just on a business level, but on a personal level as well.

“When I tell my closest friends and family that I’m opening an ice cream shop they usually give me a strange look because of who I am. But they don’t realize that it fits into who I am,” Foster said. “Because of our unique way of making ice cream we can customize with low fat ice cream, frozen yogurt, even soy and rice bases for the ultra-health nuts. Just because you put hours into the gym every week doesn’t mean you can’t have a treat. Our treats won’t destroy your hard earned beach body; it’s my favorite treat after a grueling week in the gym.”

Murray City Mayor Dan Snarr, will be in attendance to cut the grand opening ribbon on May 14 at 12 p.m. Sub Zero Ice Cream is located on 5612 South 900 East in the Marketplace Shopping Center. They are open Monday through Thursday from 12 – 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 12 – 11 p.m., closed Sunday. Visit www.subzeroicecream.com for more information.
